What is the point system?

Classifieds here are FREE.

It's just as simple as that.

However, this generosity on our part does present a problem. If we had a free, completely unmetered system — that is, you could post as many classifieds, with as many large images as you'd like — we'd quite soon, among other things, be innundated with people individually listing every single item they have for sale in their attic or on their yard.

We want to help you, but we can't be your own personal Ebay.

To that end, there is a metered point system in place which quite simply puts a cap on how much space your ads can take up. Basically, each week you get 200 additional pts added to your account, which you can either use or save up. Every classified you want placed will cost a certain number of these points.

Exactly how many points will your classified cost? It depends how big your classified is and how many images — if any — it uses and also how long you want it to run. The longer you want it to run and the bigger it is, the more points it will cost.

Typically — as an example — a classified that consists of nothing more than two or three paragraphs of text will only cost one point per week. As you get 200 points EACH WEEK, you could theoretically have about 200 simple text-based classifieds running all at the same time.

When you start adding images to the classifieds however, the cost in points can get quite high. Generally you could only run one or two classifieds at a time that have a half dozen good resolution photos.

This of course is as it is intended. The average person is really only going to need to sale one car, or boat or house, etc at a time. As we said, we're here to help you out — not to be your personal online store.

NOTE: The weekly points may be adjusted up (or possibly down) without notice as we try to find a sweet-spot for our community members.
NOTE 2: Points, in fact, are technically defined as "1 KB per Week". That is, if you have a jpeg image of a car that is 22KB (Kilobytes) in size, then it will cost 22 pts per week to run it. Additionally, if you have a couple paragraphs describing the car it may work out to be about 2KB (or about 2,000 letters) in size, and thus cost about 2 pts per week. Taken together, the text and the photo would run 24pts per week to advertise your car for sale.
NOTE 3: The points given weekly do not automatically accumulate. You have to log in once a week or so and claim them. Sorry. This is part of an anti-abuse deterrent.
